The Ankylosaurus is a herbivorous dinosaur known for its armored body and dangerous tail that lived in what is now western north America about 68 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous period. This dinosaur could be around 20 to 26 feet long and weighed between 4.8 to 8 tons. The Ankylosaurus is quadrupedal, with horns on its head and spikes all over its body. Their club tail was thought to be used to fend off predators or for fighting other members of its species for food or territory. Its name is a combination of the Greek words ankulos meaning bent or crooked and saurus meaning lizard, translating its name to “fused lizard”, this is in reference to how the bones of the Ankylosaurus were fused together to strengthen their bodies.
The armor of an Ankylosaurus is its most discerning feature, granting it great protection from predators this armor was made of knobs and plates called osteoderms or scutes. While these plates are thought to have been all over the ankylosauruses body their exact placement on the body is unknown, but they can be inferred based on information from other related species.
